Festa Della Donne

March 9, 2016 10:34 pm

March 8th is celebrated worldwide as International Womens’ Day. “La Festa delle Donne” as it is known in Italy, is the ultimate Girls Night Out.

I have heard year-after-year from my husband and his family about the festivities that take place here in honour of women–It’s a big deal! This year I was lucky enough to experience it first hand.

Husbands, boyfriends and boys are left at home to fend for themselves as females, off ALL ages fill the restaurants for a fun-filled night of eating, drinking and dancing.

This year we celebrated at an “Agrotourismo.” It’s not quite a restaurant or pizzeria; it’s an old farm house that gets renovated for eating and boarding for tourists.

Usually the food is all homemade, or “casereccia“, from ingredients that are grown or raised on the farmland. Almost every restaurant I’ve ever eaten in here in Calabria is as good or better than the food I grew up eating everyday. Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of those times.

However, the purpose of this party is more for the company and less food.
It’s a night to reunite with all our sisters and celebrate time together uninterrupted by the pressures of present times. The dinner was less than noteworthy, but the night of singing, dancing and carrying on is one I won’t soon forget.
